Artist’s Statement

After catastrophe, recovery is rooted profoundly in togetherness—to one another, and to the Earth we inhabit. Our California chaparral ecosystem is one that is adapted with a resilience to wildfire, and grows back vigorously with a strength, beauty, and renewal that is inspiring in our own time of recovery as the people that inhabit and rely on this land. This ecosystem is essential to why this special part of the world is renowned for its natural beauty, and as the human beings that are fortunate to reside in this place, we recognize that we are deeply connected to the land we live on, and heal together, right alongside it.

Symbolism

Ladyface Mountain
Ladyface is probably one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in this particular area. Even if this isn’t clear, I hope the mountain is indicative of the Santa Monica Mountains as a whole.

Yucca
The yucca was one of the first plants that was reported to be growing and showing green after the Woolsey Fire specifically, and are known to be fire-adapted to grow and spread vigorously after a fire. They also symbolize strength and protection.

California Poppy
The poppy is recognizable as California’s state flower, and is one of the first plants to repopulate an area that has experienced fire.

Hummingbird
The hummingbird symbolizes healing and resiliency.

Holding hands
The hands holding each other evoke the idea of togetherness, community, and coming together—an essential part of healing from any difficult time.

Circles
The circles and inclusion of circular shapes represent both the sun (symbol of life), as well as all cyclic movement.
